1987年,15岁的庄小威考入中国科学技术大学少年班,1991年赴美留学,1997年在加州大学伯克利分校获得物理学博士学位。之后在斯坦福大学师从诺贝尔物理学奖得主朱棣文教授进行博士后研究。34岁成为哈佛大学两个系的双聘教授。在本科及博士学习阶段,庄小威一直研究物理专业;1997年后,她在斯坦福大学师从朱棣文进行博士后研究时,才接触化学、生物学科,做跟踪分子行为的实验。

2001年,庄小威被聘为哈佛大学助理教授。她的物理根底启发她将带荧光的分子标记物附在病毒上,当用激光照射时,标记物发射出特殊的彩色光。用这种方法,借助显微镜,她详实跟踪了单个病毒的行为,也跟踪了诸如蛋白质和核糖核酸(RNA)片断这样的单个分子行为。她拍摄到单个流感病毒的连续影像,这是世界上首次记录到病毒的各阶段过程。

2006年初,庄小威晋升为哈佛正教授。她在哈佛大学建立了以自己名字命名的单分子生物物理实验室,带领21名博士、博士后研究流感病毒、艾滋病病毒、SARS等病毒侵入宿主细胞的过程。 ADSFAEQWER353423413434
