钟伟民于1993年毕业于美国洛克菲勒大学,获博士学位。

1993年至1998年在美国加利福尼亚州立大学从事博士后研究。1999年至今在美国耶鲁大学工作。
先后担任耶鲁大学分子细胞发育生物学助教授、副教授,美国NIH科学基金评审委员会委员,耶鲁大学职务聘任评审委员会委员,耶鲁大学研究生及本科生管理委员会委员等职务。2003年被中国国家自然基金委聘为国家自然基金评审委员会海外委员。
